Frank Voelkl
A German-born Firmenich perfumer whose Le Labo Santal 33 became a defining, endlessly imitated sandalwood scent.
Biography
Frank Voelkl was born in Bonn, Germany, and spent his early years between France and the Netherlands. His sense of smell was shaped young — the pungent barnyard air and fresh rain at his uncle's farm in Germany, and later the warm, chypre fragrances his mother wore in Paris. Those sensory memories pulled him toward perfumery, and he trained at ISIPCA in France, where he composed his first fragrance, a tiare-flower scent, as a tribute to his Tahitian wife.
Voelkl helped establish Le Labo's early olfactory identity, creating signature scents including Santal 33, Ylang 49, Musc 25 and Benjoin 19 — with Santal 33 becoming one of the most influential and widely imitated sandalwood fragrances of the past decade. He has also created for houses like Guerlain, Dolce&Gabbana, Hugo Boss, and Sarah Jessica Parker's Covet. His love of travel and nature, especially French Polynesia, continues to inform his work, and in July 2026 he was named a Firmenich Master Perfumer.
